John and Lavina were married 20 December, 1854 in Tennessee. John fought in the Civil War on the North side, was a cavalryman in Company C, Tenth Regiment, and was injured in battle. He was discharged 6-20-1865 at Nashville, TN. According to his discharge papers, he was 5'10'' tall, with light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair.
