Calvin Craig
Laodicia Jane Shaw
Calvin Craig was originally from Missouri, and later moved to Sumner, Illinois. Birth date unknown.
Jane Shaw was born 11 September, 1842, in Posy County, Indiana. Her family had lived in Brown County, Ohio, prior to this.
Calvin Craig was quite a bit older than Jane, and had probably been married before.
Calvin and Jane had two(?) children:
Mattie Henrietta b. 1-4-1865 d. 6-11-1949
m. Daniel D. Purcell
Merrit(?) b. date unknown, Olney, Il.
Family tradition says that after Jane Shaw married Calvin Craig, they took their young family and started west. Somewhere while they were traveling Calvin became ill and died. About the same time their cow died, so Jane brought her family back to Illinois where her family lived.
Calvin's date of death is unknown. He is buried in Sedalia, Missouri.
After Calvin died Jane moved in with her mother, Elizabeth Shaw, who lived in Salem with two other daughters, Elizabeth and Belle. Belle Shaw was deaf and dumb, but could read. Jane then married Aaron Shreffler, who had four boys of his own, and they lived in Tonti Township, near Alma. Then Aaron died, 17 January, 1903, and Jane's mother, Elizabeth, came to live with her. This was when Mattie was 11 or 12. Elizabeth later had a stroke. Jane Shaw Shreffler was a seamstress, and had her own shop in Salem.
Jane Shreffler died 29 July, 1907. She is buried at the Martin Cemetery, beside her second husband.
